Pianos, Gun Safes, and Oversize Specialty Pieces
Some pieces do not belong on a regular crew’s dolly. An upright piano weighs north of 500 pounds and balances on three legs. A baby grand has to come off its legs and ride on its side. A 700-pound gun safe headed up a flight of stairs needs the right rigging or you damage the safe, the stair treads, and somebody’s back. Top Moving runs these as a separate scope with the right equipment and a crew that has done it many times before — not figured out on your staircase.
The equipment that belongs on these jobs
- Walk-boards sized for the threshold and door-jamb clearances at the origin and the destination
- e-track anchor points throughout the truck box so the instrument rides strapped down through every brake and turn
- Hurricane-rated tie-downs that hold through the kind of bump that loosens a standard ratchet
- Piano boards sized to uprights, consoles, and grands, with hand-rope grips
- Lifting straps that move the weight onto the leg drive rather than the lower back
- Heavy-duty stair-climbing dollies rated above 1,200 pounds for gun safes
- Runner across tile, Saltillo, and granite carry paths
How a grand actually exits the house
A grand comes off its legs at origin. The pedal lyre is removed and pad-wrapped separately. The body rides on its padded side on a piano board, never muscled down the stairs intact. The descent uses lifting straps, walk-boards, and a four-mover crew so the instrument is controlled the whole way, not white-knuckled.
Gun safes and the rest of the heavy oddities
Gun safes are their own category — enormous density packed into a small footprint, often headed up or down a staircase between floors of a slab-on-grade ranch’s converted upper room or a Champions Gate two-story. We bring the rated stair-climbing gear and enough hands to keep the safe controlled at every step. The same approach covers slate-top pool tables, wood stoves, oversize statuary, restaurant-grade appliances, and commercial gym racks.
Pricing starts at $395 for specialty work, scoped to the piece, the carry path, and the staircase. Janelle looks at the instrument and the route before she signs the quote. Plenty of customers book a piano or a safe relocation on its own, no other furniture; the $395 minimum applies the same way.
